Summer Safety Series: Water Safety for Children

Whether it is a backyard pool, the beach, a lake, or even a small kiddie pool, water safety is one of the most important conversations families can have during the summer months.

Drowning can happen quickly and silently, even in shallow water. Because of this, active supervision is critical. Adults should avoid distractions like phones or conversations when children are swimming and should always designate a “water watcher.”

Some important reminders for families:
• Children should never swim alone.
• Life jackets should be worn around open water and while boating.
• Swimming lessons can help build confidence and safety skills.
• Empty small pools and water toys after use.
• Pool fences with self-latching gates add an important layer of protection.

It is also helpful for parents and caregivers to learn CPR. In emergencies, immediate action can save lives while waiting for first responders.

Summer fun and water often go hand in hand, but safety should always come first. A few preventative steps can make a lifelong difference.
