Summer Safety Series: Keeping Families Safe in the Heat

Summer brings sunshine, vacations, pool days, and outdoor fun — but it also brings increased risks for dehydration, heat exhaustion, and heat stroke, especially for young children, older adults, and those with chronic health conditions.

One of the best ways to stay safe during the summer months is simple: stay hydrated. Encourage children to drink water frequently, even before they feel thirsty. Sports drinks can help during long periods of activity, but water should remain the primary source of hydration for most families.

It is also important to pay attention to the signs of heat-related illness. Symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, excessive sweating, fatigue, or confusion can signal that someone is becoming overheated. If this happens, move to a cool area immediately, offer fluids, and seek medical attention if symptoms worsen.

Parents should also remember:
• Never leave children or pets in a parked car — even for a minute.
• Dress children in lightweight, light-colored clothing.
• Take breaks from outdoor activities during peak afternoon heat.
• Use sunscreen regularly and reapply often.

Summer memories are meant to be joyful. Taking a few extra precautions can help keep everyone healthy and safe while enjoying the season.
